Bondage Bear
Once upon a time, there was a sweet and innocent white teddy bear with a yellow ribbon around his neck. So sweet and innocent that he did not have a name.
And then his owner went to university. In the back of psychology lectures, a conversation notebook was passed around a bunch of friends and cheeky conversations took place in its pages. One fateful evening, one of the students drew a sketch of a 'bondage bear' and the owner of the 'sweet and innocent' teddy bear looked st the drawing and thought 'I've got just the bear for that.'
And so Bondage Bear was born.
She bought him a studded black leather collar from a punk shop in Centrepoint, fashioned him a reversible leather jacket with fake cow hide on the inside, gave him a scar on his cheek and sewed press studs on his forehead, inspired by Vivian from The Young Ones.
Bondy was a hit on the student scene. He visited student parties in Newcastle, sometimes ending with his head in a glass of champagne, and was the subject of hand drawn mini comics by art students such as 'Bondage Bear meets Barbie and Ken'.
Then his owner graduated from uni, became serious and sat Bondy on a shelf to observe life. Years passed.
One day when she was back in singledom, she noticed that friends were producing photo books of their 'furry friends' travel adventures and suddenly Bondy demanded a life. He was sick of being left on a shelf.
He demanded that he become the mascot for trivia, requested stowaway on the Bravo Performing Arts Cruise and begged to hang out at the Romance Writers of Australia's conference, as well as the Byron Bay Writers Festival.
And so the legend of Bondage Bear was ressurected...and now his favourite pastime is getting photos with actors, musicians and authors.
